On macOS, the virtio-fs host server used by Docker Sandboxes improperly follows symlinks when reopening an unlinked file from a stored path. A malicious guest can replace a parent directory with a symlink, escape the shared workspace, and read or modify arbitrary host files as the VMM user, potentially achieving host code execution.
Risk Assessment
An attacker inside the guest VM can access arbitrary host files and potentially execute code on the host. The risk is high in environments using Docker Sandboxes on macOS with untrusted guests.
Recommendation
Upgrade Docker Sandboxes to a version containing the fix. Limit trust in guest VMs and avoid running untrusted images in environments that share filesystems with the host.
