Summary

A flaw was found in the Observability Operator where deploying a Namespace-Scoped MonitorStack creates a ServiceAccount with a ClusterRole. This allows a Kubernetes account with only namespaced-level roles to escalate privileges to the cluster level by impersonating that ServiceAccount.

Risk Assessment

The risk is privilege escalation by an unauthorized user or tenant, potentially leading to uncontrolled access to cluster-wide resources and breaking tenant isolation.

Recommendation

Immediately update the Observability Operator to a patched version and review MonitorStack permission configurations to ensure they are not accessible to unauthorized entities.

Original NVD description (English source)

A flaw was found in the Observability Operator. The Operator creates a ServiceAccount with *ClusterRole* upon deployment of the *Namespace-Scoped* Custom Resource MonitorStack. This issue allows an adversarial Kubernetes Account with only namespaced-level roles, for example, a tenant controlling a namespace, to create a MonitorStack in the authorized namespace and then elevate permission to the cluster level by impersonating the ServiceAccount created by the Operator, resulting in privilege escalation and other issues.
