Summary

A vulnerability in NetworkManager-sstp allows a local unprivileged user to embed special characters (shell metacharacters) into VPN profile fields such as CA certificate or proxy settings. These unescaped characters are processed by the pppd daemon running with root privileges, enabling arbitrary command execution with elevated permissions when a malicious VPN connection is activated.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can gain full root-level control of the system, leading to complete host compromise and exposure of stored data.

Recommendation

Update NetworkManager-sstp to the latest patched version and restrict VPN profile creation/editing to trusted users only.

Original NVD description (English source)

A flaw was found in NetworkManager-sstp, the SSTP VPN plugin for NetworkManager. A local unprivileged user can exploit this vulnerability by embedding special characters, known as shell metacharacters, into VPN connection profile fields such as CA certificate or proxy settings. These unescaped characters are then processed by the `pppd` daemon, which runs with root privileges, allowing the attacker to execute arbitrary commands with elevated permissions when a malicious VPN connection is activated.
