Summary

Axolotl before 0.19.0 contains a remote code execution vulnerability in the multipack patch path where trust_remote_code defaults to None instead of False, bypassing the security guard. Attackers can execute arbitrary Python code by crafting a malicious Hugging Face model repository selected as base_model, which is loaded with hardcoded trust_remote_code=True during AutoModelForCausalLM.from_pretrained.

Risk Assessment

An attacker could execute arbitrary Python code on the victim's system, leading to full host compromise and breach of confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The risk is critical in model training and fine-tuning environments.

Recommendation

Upgrade Axolotl to version 0.19.0 or later. Avoid using untrusted Hugging Face model repositories as base_model until the patch is applied.
