Summary

The AMP for WP – Accelerated Mobile Pages plugin for WordPress (versions up to and including 1.1.16) is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Comment Content through Regex Transformation due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. An unauthenticated attacker can inject arbitrary scripts into pages that execute when a user visits the injected page. The crafted payload uses only WordPress-permitted comment tags and attributes (an anchor with href and title), and the AMP sanitizer pipeline omits javascript: protocol blocking, so neither the comment save filter nor the AMP output stage removes the malicious URI introduced by the transformation.

Risk Assessment

An unauthenticated attacker can perform an XSS attack, potentially leading to session data theft or user account takeover.

Recommendation

Update the AMP for WP plugin to a version newer than 1.1.16, or if not possible, disable the plugin or restrict the ability to add comments.

This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.
