Summary

libregf through 20260526 contains a heap out-of-bounds read in libregf_value_item_read_value_data() because it bounds value data size without subtracting the 4-byte old-format cell offset. An attacker can supply a crafted version 1.0/1.1 REGF hive whose value data cell ends its hive bin, leaking adjacent heap bytes or crashing parsers like regfexport and plaso.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can cause memory data leakage or crash forensic tools processing untrusted Windows registry files. The risk affects systems performing forensic analysis or hive file conversion.

Recommendation

Update libregf to a patched version and avoid processing untrusted hive files until the fix is applied. Restrict access to tools such as regfexport and plaso for untrusted input.
