Summary

libfsapfs through 20260921 contains an integer underflow in libfsapfs_key_encrypted_key_read_data() that allows attackers to trigger heap out-of-bounds reads via crafted KEK attributes. An attacker can supply a crafted encrypted APFS image with malformed HMAC or wrapped KEK attribute lengths to crash fsapfsinfo, pyfsapfs, dfVFS or plaso and read adjacent heap memory before password checks.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can crash forensic tools (denial of service) or leak heap memory data before password verification. The risk affects systems performing forensic analysis of APFS images.

Recommendation

Update libfsapfs to a patched version and avoid processing untrusted APFS images until the fix is applied. Restrict access to tools such as fsapfsinfo, pyfsapfs, dfVFS and plaso for untrusted input.
