Summary

SumatraPDF 3.6.1 and earlier has a vulnerability in ChmFile::GetCharZ() where file-controlled unsigned offsets are narrowed to signed integers without a lower-bound check. This can cause reads before the /#STRINGS buffer and deterministic application termination.

Risk Assessment

The risk includes application crash (denial of service) when opening crafted CHM files, potentially leading to data loss or service unavailability.

Recommendation

Avoid opening untrusted CHM files and monitor for vendor updates, as no fixed version is available yet.

Original NVD description (English source)

SumatraPDF is a multi-format reader for Windows. In 3.6.1 and earlier, ChmFile::GetCharZ() narrows file-controlled unsigned string offsets from /#WINDOWS and /#IVB to signed integers without a lower-bound check. An offset that becomes negative can make the function read before the /#STRINGS buffer, causing deterministic application termination. No broader impact is claimed beyond the advisory-supported conditions. No fixed version is available as of this review.
