Summary

anchorme through version 3.0.8 contains a Regular Expression Denial of Service (ReDoS) vulnerability in the IPv6 host extraction regex due to catastrophic backtracking. Specially crafted input strings with repeated patterns can cause exponential regex engine backtracking, blocking the Node.js event loop.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can remotely block a Node.js application, preventing it from handling other requests and causing a denial of service. This impacts the availability of services relying on the library.

Recommendation

Update anchorme to a version later than 3.0.8 if available, or apply a workaround by validating and limiting input length before passing it to the anchorme parsing function.
