Summary

The ksmbd module in the Linux kernel lacks a check for simultaneous SMB operations. A client sending many simultaneous SMB operations can exhaust memory through ksmbd_work_cache, causing an OOM issue. The ksmbd credit mechanism cannot handle this, so the fix adds a check for exceeding max credits by assuming each SMB request consumes at least one credit.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can cause memory exhaustion (OOM) on a server running ksmbd, resulting in denial of service. This affects the availability of SMB file sharing services.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix that adds the max credits check. Monitor memory usage on servers running ksmbd.

Original NVD description (English source)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ksmbd: check outstanding simultaneous SMB operations If Client send simultaneous SMB operations to ksmbd, It exhausts too much memory through the "ksmbd_work_cache”. It will cause OOM issue. ksmbd has a credit mechanism but it can't handle this problem. This patch add the check if it exceeds max credits to prevent this problem by assuming that one smb request consumes at least one credit.
