Summary

The c_rehash script does not properly sanitize shell metacharacters, allowing command injection. The script is distributed by some operating systems in a manner where it is automatically executed. On such systems, an attacker can execute arbitrary commands with the script's privileges.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the c_rehash script, potentially leading to full system compromise. The risk is particularly high on systems where the script is automatically executed.

Recommendation

Update OpenSSL to version 3.0.3, 1.1.1o, or 1.0.2ze (or later) depending on the branch in use. It is also recommended to replace the obsolete c_rehash script with the OpenSSL rehash command line tool.
