CVE-2019-5443

HighCVSS 7.8
Published: Updated: Translated: NVD NIST

Exploitation Probability (EPSS)

Elevated risk
0.69%

52th percentile - higher than 52% of all known CVEs

Summary

A non-privileged user or program can put code and a config file in a known non-privileged path (under C:/usr/local/) that will make curl <= 7.65.1 automatically run the code (as an openssl "engine") on invocation. If that curl is invoked by a privileged user it can do anything it wants.

Risk Assessment

The risk to the organization includes the possibility of privilege escalation when a privileged user runs curl, which could lead to full system compromise and security breach.

Recommendation

It is recommended to update curl to a version newer than 7.65.1 and avoid running curl with administrator privileges in environments where unprivileged users have access to system paths.
