Summary

The OpenSSL ECDSA signature algorithm has been shown to be vulnerable to a timing side channel attack. An attacker could use variations in the signing algorithm to recover the private key. Affected versions are 1.1.0-1.1.0i and 1.1.1. Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.0j and 1.1.1a.

Risk Assessment

An attacker could recover the ECDSA private key, potentially leading to compromise of confidentiality and integrity of data protected by that key, including digital signatures and TLS sessions.

Recommendation

Update OpenSSL to version 1.1.0j or 1.1.1a (or later) to eliminate the timing side channel vulnerability.
