CVE-2018-0156

HighCVSS 7.5KEV
Published: Updated: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

A vulnerability in the Smart Install feature of Cisco IOS and IOS XE Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to trigger a reload of an affected device, resulting in a denial of service (DoS). It is due to improper validation of packet data. Sending a crafted packet to TCP port 4786 can cause a device reload. Only Smart Install client switches are affected, not Smart Install directors.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can remotely trigger a reload of a Cisco switch acting as a Smart Install client, causing network disruption. This can lead to service unavailability and communication interruptions.

Recommendation

Upgrade Cisco IOS/IOS XE software to a version containing the fix for Cisco Bug ID CSCvd40673. Disable Smart Install on devices that do not require it, or restrict access to TCP port 4786.
