CVE Catalog

CVE-2014-0224

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

OpenSSL versions before 0.9.8za, 1.0.0 before 1.0.0m, and 1.0.1 before 1.0.1h do not properly restrict processing of ChangeCipherSpec messages. This allows man-in-the-middle attackers to trigger the use of a zero-length master key in certain OpenSSL-to-OpenSSL communications, potentially hijacking sessions or obtaining sensitive information.

Risk Assessment

Organizations may be exposed to session hijacking and sensitive data leakage, which can lead to serious legal and reputational consequences.

Recommendation

It is recommended to update OpenSSL to the latest version to mitigate this vulnerability and ensure secure communications.

Original NVD description (English source)

OpenSSL before 0.9.8za, 1.0.0 before 1.0.0m, and 1.0.1 before 1.0.1h does not properly restrict processing of ChangeCipherSpec messages, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to trigger use of a zero-length master key in certain OpenSSL-to-OpenSSL communications, and consequently hijack sessions or obtain sensitive information, via a crafted TLS handshake, aka the "CCS Injection" vulnerability.
