Summary

In the Linux kernel NTFS filesystem, ntfs_new_attr_flags() passes the wrong MFT record pointer to ntfs_attr_record_resize(). When the attribute resides in an extent record, the base record pointer is passed instead of the extent record, causing incorrect size calculations in memmove.

Risk Assessment

Incorrect size calculations during memmove can lead to kernel memory corruption or on-disk data corruption, causing system crashes or filesystem damage. Exploitation requires operations that modify NTFS file attributes.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version with the fix that passes ctx->mrec instead of m to ntfs_attr_record_resize(). Avoid modifying file attributes on NTFS filesystems until the update is applied.

Original NVD description (English source)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ntfs: fix incorrect MFT record pointer passed to ntfs_attr_record_resize ntfs_new_attr_flags() passes the wrong MFT record to ntfs_attr_record_resize(). When the attribute is in an extent record, ctx->mrec points to the extent but the function receives the base record pointer m, causing incorrect size calculations in memmove. Fix by passing ctx->mrec (the actual MFT record containing the attribute) instead of m (the base MFT record) to ntfs_attr_record_resize().
