CVE-2026-98951

Unknown
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

In the Linux kernel RISC-V ptrace handling, register set buffers were not zero-initialized before copying data from userspace. A PTRACE_SETREGSET request with a short iov_len left uninitialized stack data that was then validated and copied into the target's state.

Risk Assessment

Could lead to leaking uninitialized kernel stack memory or storing invalid values (e.g., shadow stack pointer) in the target process state, potentially enabling security bypass or data disclosure.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix that zeroes the regset buffers in riscv_vr_set() and riscv_cfi_set().

Original NVD description (English source)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: riscv: ptrace: Zero-initialize regset buffers before copyin user_regset_copyin() only copies `count` bytes, so a PTRACE_SETREGSET request with a short iov_len leaves the rest of the stack buffer uninitialized. In riscv_vr_set() that garbage is validated and copied into the target's vstate, and in riscv_cfi_set() it can be stored as the target's shadow stack pointer. Zero both buffers, as the get path already does.
