17th percentile - higher than 17% of all known CVEs

Summary

JAXB factory methods rely solely on FEATURE_SECURE_PROCESSING to prevent XML External Entity (XXE) resolution. On JAXP implementations where that feature alone does not block external entity resolution, an attacker can read local files via out-of-band XXE.

Risk Assessment

If the application processes untrusted XML via JAXB, an attacker can read local files, leading to data exposure.

Recommendation

Disable external entity resolution independently of FEATURE_SECURE_PROCESSING, e.g., by setting ACCESS_EXTERNAL_DTD and ACCESS_EXTERNAL_SCHEMA properties to an empty string.

The JAXB factory methods historically relied solely on `FEATURE_SECURE_PROCESSING` to prevent XML External Entity (XXE) resolution. On JAXP implementations where that feature alone does not block external entity resolution, an attacker who can get untrusted XML unmarshalled through JAXB can read local files via out-of-band XXE.
