Summary

GIMP contains a stack-based buffer overflow in APNG file parsing due to lack of proper validation of user-supplied data length before copying it to a stack buffer. A remote attacker can achieve arbitrary code execution in the context of the current process if the target opens a malicious file or visits a malicious page.

Risk Assessment

Opening a malicious APNG file can lead to arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the user running GIMP, potentially compromising the workstation and accessible data.

Recommendation

Update GIMP to a version containing the fix. Avoid opening APNG files from untrusted sources until the update is applied.

Original NVD description (English source)

GIMP APNG File Parsing Stack-based Buffer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GIMP. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of APNG files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a stack-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-29400.
