Summary

A vulnerability exists in the Linux kernel SCSI subsystem where scsi_alloc_sgtables() leaves DMA padding bytes (pad_len) uninitialized for the last unaligned scatterlist element. This leads to an uninitialized memory read (detected by KMSAN) during DMA operations, potentially causing data leakage or system instability.

Risk Assessment

A local attacker able to issue ioctl operations on SCSI block devices could trigger an uninitialized kernel memory read, potentially leading to information disclosure or a system crash (denial of service).

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix that first extends last_sg->length by pad_len and then zeroes those bytes using sg_zero_buffer(). If updating is not possible, restrict access to SCSI device ioctl interfaces for untrusted users.

These bytes remain uninitialized, which leads to a problem. Extend last_sg->length by pad_len first, then use sg_zero_buffer() to zero those pad_len bytes. sg_zero_buffer() uses sg_miter internally, which correctly handles sg entries spanning multiple pages and padding that crosses a page boundary.
