Summary

The Ad Inserter plugin for WordPress up to version 2.8.18 is vulnerable to Reflected XSS via the 's' search parameter. Insufficient input sanitization and output escaping allow unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts that execute when a user clicks a crafted link. Exploitation requires an ad block with {title} or {short-title} placeholder enabled on search pages.

Risk Assessment

The risk involves execution of malicious scripts in the victim's browser, potentially leading to session theft, account takeover, or content manipulation. The attack requires user interaction but can affect any site visitor.

Recommendation

Update the Ad Inserter plugin to the latest patched version. Additionally, consider restricting the use of {title} and {short-title} placeholders on search pages if not essential.

Original NVD description (English source)

The Ad Inserter – Ad Manager & AdSense Ads plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via 's' Search Parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.8.18 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link. Exploitation requires that a site administrator has configured at least one Ad Inserter block using the {title} or {short-title} placeholder with that block enabled for search pages, which is a standard, documented plugin feature.
