Summary

The Modals extension for Joomla (regularlabs.com) below version 17.0.0 treats destinations using executable browser URL schemes as ordinary modal URLs. The value can reach both the generated link and the iframe-loading path, enabling privileged stored XSS without using the separate Pro JavaScript Events feature.

Risk Assessment

An attacker with content authoring privileges can inject JavaScript executed in visitors' browsers, risking session theft or account takeover. The risk affects all Joomla sites running the Modals extension below version 17.0.0.

Recommendation

Update the Modals extension to version 17.0.0 or later. Restrict content authoring privileges to trusted users only.
