CVE-2026-82944
HighCVSS 8.8Exploitation Probability (EPSS)
Low risk11th percentile - higher than 11% of all known CVEs
Summary
SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier contains a vulnerability in multi-segment data transfers where a malicious device can overflow memory buffers. The software checks the total size only once at the beginning but doesn't track the cumulative size as multiple segments arrive. An attacker can declare a small initial size to pass validation, then send additional segments that exceed the allocated buffer, allowing controlled data to be written beyond buffer boundaries and potentially enabling code execution.
Risk Assessment
A malicious device could cause a buffer overflow and remote code execution on the master system. This poses a serious threat to confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the control system.
Recommendation
Update SOEM to a version later than 2.0.0 if available, or implement cumulative segment size tracking. Restrict network access to trusted devices and monitor for unusual messages.
Other vulnerabilities in SOEM
See all- CVE-2026-82947High
SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier contains multiple vulnerabilities in frame processing where a malicious device can cause the master to read data outside allocated buffers. The software uses length and offset values from device messages without validating them against buffer sizes. This can cause the master to access invalid memory locations, potentially disclosing sensitive information or causing crashes.
- CVE-2026-82946Medium
SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier contains a vulnerability where a malicious device can crash the master system. When the software receives an error response, it clears an internal pointer but continues processing; if another message arrives before timeout, the software attempts to use the cleared pointer, causing a crash. An attacker can trigger this with a simple sequence of two messages.
- CVE-2026-82945Medium
SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier contains a vulnerability during device configuration where a malicious device can cause memory corruption. The software writes configuration data to a fixed-size array without checking if the array index exceeds its maximum size of EC_MAXFMMU entries. A device presenting more than EC_MAXFMMU configuration blocks can force writes beyond the array boundary, corrupting adjacent memory structures and potentially disrupting subsequent operations.
- CVE-2026-82943Medium
SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier contains vulnerabilities where a malicious device can send messages that cause the master to read data from memory locations beyond the intended buffer. The software uses length values from device responses without validating them against actual buffer sizes. An attacker can exploit this to extract up to 64KB of data from the master's memory.
- CVE-2026-70388High
SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier contains vulnerabilities where a malicious device on the network can send specially crafted messages that cause the master to write data outside allocated memory boundaries. The software performs arithmetic on message length values without proper validation, allowing negative or extremely large values to bypass safety checks. This can corrupt memory and potentially allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the master system.
