Summary

In the Linux kernel, in the ata: pata_sl82c105 driver, there is a use-after-free when reading the bridge revision. pci_get_slot() returns a referenced PCI device, but after the change to direct access to the revision field, the read occurs after pci_dev_put(), which may lead to use of freed memory. The fix moves the revision read before dropping the reference.

Risk Assessment

The vulnerability could lead to system crashes or unpredictable behavior when working with ATA controllers. It could be exploited for privilege escalation with hardware access.

Recommendation

Apply a Linux kernel update containing the fix that reads the revision before dropping the reference.

Original NVD description (English source)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ata: pata_sl82c105: fix bridge revision use-after-free pci_get_slot() returns a referenced PCI device. Commit 44c10138fd4b ("PCI: Change all drivers to use pci_device->revision") replaced a configuration-space read with direct access to the cached revision field, but left that access after pci_dev_put(). The bridge may therefore be freed before its revision is read. Read the revision before dropping the reference.
