CVE-2026-80589
CriticalCVSS 9.8Exploitation Probability (EPSS)
Low risk30th percentile - higher than 30% of all known CVEs
Summary
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel block subsystem was found where the timeout timer is not stopped when releasing a disk that was never added (e.g., after a failed probe). This leads to a use-after-free in the timer mechanism, potentially causing system crashes or privilege escalation.
Risk Assessment
The risk includes system crashes (kernel panic) or potential privilege escalation in environments with NVMe disks, especially during concurrent controller resets or device addition failures. An attacker with local access could exploit this to destabilize the system.
Recommendation
Immediately apply the official Linux kernel patch that stops the timer and queue work items before calling blk_mq_exit_queue(). Also update the system to a kernel version containing the fix.
Other vulnerabilities in Linux kernel
See all- CVE-2026-98374Unknown
In the Linux kernel, a use-after-free vulnerability exists in tcp_send_synack() involving retransmit_skb_hint. When tcp_send_synack() replaces the cloned SYN skb at the head of the retransmit queue with a copy, it frees the original but tp->retransmit_skb_hint still points to the freed object, which can be exploited by an unprivileged TFO client to trigger a use-after-free.
- CVE-2026-98373Unknown
In the Linux kernel, a bug exists in move_hugetlb_page_tables() where the destination address is advanced too far when the source and destination offsets within their page tables differ. This can lead to a kernel panic on x86-64.
- CVE-2026-98048Unknown
In the Linux kernel's BPF subsystem, mark_fastcall_pattern_for_call() must ensure that a matched "spill; call; fill" instruction series is not interrupted by a jump. Otherwise the rewrite applied by bpf_remove_fastcall_spills_fills() is unsound. The fix records instructions targeted by jumps in insn_aux_data[*].jump_target and uses this flag to stop growing a pattern.
- CVE-2026-98047Unknown
In the Linux kernel's BPF subsystem, in_rbtree_lock_required_cb() only checks the innermost verifier frame, so rbtree callback restrictions disappear in a nested static subprogram call frame. The subprogram can unlock the tree, remove and drop the node being compared, then relock, leading to freed memory being linked into the tree.
- CVE-2026-98045Unknown
In the Linux kernel, a BPF verifier vulnerability affects stack helpers that may block on filesystem reads (e.g., resolving build IDs) but were not marked as sleepable. The verifier could still allow these helpers from non-sleepable regions such as RCU or preemption-disabled sections.
- CVE-2026-98044Unknown
In the Linux kernel, the BPF verifier mishandled legacy packet-load instructions (BPF_LD_ABS/BPF_LD_IND) reached from callbacks, triggering a verifier bug warning and an -EFAULT on BPF_PROG_LOAD. A privileged program loader could trigger this issue.
- CVE-2026-98043Unknown
In the Linux kernel, the BPF verifier incorrectly inferred that a pointer with an unbounded offset is non-NULL based solely on its type. As a result, a BPF program could pass verification while a NULL pointer dereference occurred at runtime.
- CVE-2026-98042Unknown
In the Linux kernel, the BPF verifier could resurrect a scalar id dropped by collect_linked_regs() because snapshots of compared registers were taken before linked registers were collected. This could lead to range inconsistencies and precision propagation issues.
- CVE-2026-98041High
In the Linux kernel, the BPF verifier incorrectly predicted the outcome of pointer vs zero comparisons in JMP32 instructions, failing to distinguish BPF_JMP from BPF_JMP32 comparisons. This led to incorrect inference that a jump is always taken.
- CVE-2026-98040Unknown
In the Linux kernel, the BPF verifier did not mark the zero register as precise for a register-form NULL check. As a result, one path was pruned and the program could dereference a zero pointer at runtime.
Original NVD description (English source)
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: block: stop the timeout timer when releasing a never added disk disk_release() undoes blk_mq_init_allocated_queue() for a disk whose probe failed before add_disk(), but it only calls blk_mq_exit_queue(). Nothing there stops q->timeout, and that timer rolls forward: it stays pending until it next expires, not until the last request completes. So if the driver issued any I/O before adding the disk, the request_queue is freed while still linked into a timer wheel bucket. Commit 6f8191fdf41d ("block: simplify disk shutdown") dropped the blk_cleanup_queue() call that used to stop it. __del_gendisk() and blk_mq_destroy_queue() still do; only the probe failure path lost it. nvme gets there because nvme_update_ns_info() submits Report Zones or FDP io-mgmt-recv on ns->queue before the disk is added, so a later failure - a concurrent reset setting NVME_CTRL_FROZEN, or device_add_disk() failing - lands in put_disk() with the timer armed: BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in detach_if_pending+0x30c/0x340 Write of size 8 at addr ffff888004d71310 by task kworker/u8:2/37 __timer_delete_sync+0x156/0x240 kernel/time/timer.c:1621 blk_sync_queue+0x22/0x40 block/blk-core.c:222 nvme_sync_queues+0x100/0x150 drivers/nvme/host/core.c:5362 nvme_reset_work+0x138/0x930 drivers/nvme/host/pci.c:3264 Allocated by task 34: __blk_mq_alloc_disk+0x33/0x100 block/blk-mq.c:4462 nvme_alloc_ns+0x290/0x3870 drivers/nvme/host/core.c:4146 Freed by task 0: blk_free_queue_rcu+0x3a/0x50 block/blk-core.c:254 rcu_core+0xc10/0x1730 kernel/rcu/tree.c:2857 The queue being synced there is ctrl->admin_q, only a victim sharing a timer wheel bucket with the freed queue's dangling entry; other runs tripped in enqueue_timer(), __run_timers() or blk_mq_timeout_work(). Failing nvme_alloc_ns() with a debug patch makes it deterministic: one leaked timer trips KASAN within seconds, while 1987 patched releases produced no splat. Stop the timer and the queue work items before blk_mq_exit_queue(), like blk_mq_destroy_queue() does. Found by FuzzNvme.
