Summary

A flaw was found in the buildah/copier Go package. When used outside of Buildah by a non-root caller, a crafted tar archive containing malicious symlinks can escape the target extraction directory and create files outside the intended destination. Buildah itself uses chroot hardening and is not affected.

Risk Assessment

An attacker could write files outside the intended extraction directory, potentially overwriting or creating unauthorized files on the system. The risk applies to applications using buildah/copier outside of Buildah.

Recommendation

Update the buildah/copier package to a version containing the fix and avoid using it outside Buildah by non-privileged users. Consider restricting the extraction of untrusted tar archives.
