Summary

In Eclipse Embedded CDT versions 6.0 to 6.7, extracting a compromised CMSIS-Pack archive can write files to locations outside the pack directory. This allows arbitrary files to be written to other locations on disk (path traversal / Zip Slip).

Risk Assessment

An attacker can overwrite or create arbitrary files on the developer workstation, potentially leading to code execution or environment corruption. The risk mainly affects users importing untrusted CMSIS packs.

Recommendation

Upgrade Eclipse Embedded CDT to a version newer than 6.7 once available. Until then, avoid importing CMSIS packs from untrusted sources.
