Summary

In Open WebUI from version 0.8.11 before 0.10.0, the POST /api/v1/images/edit endpoint only required a verified account but did not enforce the global image-edit switch or per-user image-generation permission. This allowed a non-admin user to invoke server-side image editing with administrator-configured provider credentials.

Risk Assessment

The risk is that a regular user without proper permissions can use administrator-configured AI provider credentials for image editing, potentially leading to unauthorized resource consumption and security policy violations.

Recommendation

Immediately upgrade Open WebUI to version 0.10.0 or later, which includes a fix that enforces permission checks before allowing image editing operations.

From 0.8.11 before 0.10.0, POST /api/v1/images/edit required only a verified account and did not enforce the global image-edit switch or the per-user image-generation permission, allowing a non-admin user to invoke server-side image editing with administrator-configured provider credentials.
