Summary

In NATS Server prior to versions 2.14.3 and 2.12.12, a client could be registered as the configured no_auth_user through a parser path used when the first client operation was not CONNECT, bypassing user-level connection restrictions such as allowed_connection_types or proxy_required that normal authentication would apply.

Risk Assessment

The risk is that an unauthenticated client can gain access to the server with the privileges of the configured no_auth_user, bypassing key security restrictions, potentially leading to unauthorized access to the messaging system.

Recommendation

It is recommended to immediately upgrade NATS Server to version 2.14.3 or 2.12.12, which contain the fix for this vulnerability.
