Summary

In Wasmtime 43.0.0, cloning a wasmtime::Linker is unsound and can result in use-after-free bugs. The bug is not controllable by guest Wasm programs; it can only be triggered by a specific sequence of embedder API calls by the host: clone a Linker, drop the original, then use the clone. The vulnerability is fixed in 43.0.1.

Risk Assessment

A local use-after-free in the Wasmtime runtime may cause application crashes or potentially lead to unauthorized code execution in the host process context. The risk affects applications embedding Wasmtime that clone Linker instances.

Recommendation

Upgrade Wasmtime to version 43.0.1 or later. Until patched, avoid cloning wasmtime::Linker and dropping the original instance before using the clone.

Original NVD description (English source)

Wasmtime is a runtime for WebAssembly. In 43.0.0, cloning a wasmtime::Linker is unsound and can result in use-after-free bugs. This bug is not controllable by guest Wasm programs. It can only be triggered by a specific sequence of embedder API calls made by the host. Specifically, the following steps must occur to trigger the bug clone a wasmtime::Linker, drop the original linker instance, use the new, cloned linker instance, resulting in a use-after-free. This vulnerability is fixed in 43.0.1.
