Summary

An authenticated user with read/write privileges can cause the mongod process to terminate due to an out-of-memory condition by sending a crafted aggregation command. The libmongocrypt library insufficiently validates payload-supplied values, leading to excessive memory allocation.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can cause a denial of service (DoS) on the MongoDB server, leading to database service unavailability and potential data loss.

Recommendation

Upgrade MongoDB to a version that includes a fix for libmongocrypt. Restrict user privileges to the minimum necessary and monitor memory usage of the mongod process.
