CVE-2026-121517
MediumCVSS 5.0Summary
A vulnerability was detected in IrfanView 4.76.0.0 on Win64 in an unknown functionality of the TIFF Wang Annotation Handler component, resulting in a heap-based buffer overflow. The attack is possible remotely, though of high complexity and difficult to exploit; the exploit is now public. The vendor confirms that the TIF-Annotations option is OFF by default, so normal users are not affected, and rates the danger level as low.
Risk Assessment
With TIFF Wang annotation handling enabled, opening a crafted file could lead to a heap-based buffer overflow and potential code execution. The option is disabled by default, which limits exposure.
Recommendation
Apply the available IrfanView patch. Ensure the TIF-Annotations option remains disabled, and avoid opening untrusted TIFF files.
Other vulnerabilities in IrfanView
See all- CVE-2017-2813High
An exploitable integer overflow vulnerability exists in the JPEG 2000 parser functionality of IrfanView 4.44. A specially crafted jpeg2000 image can cause an integer overflow leading to wrong memory allocation resulting in arbitrary code execution.
- CVE-2021-46064High
IrfanView 4.59 is vulnerable to a buffer overflow in the function at address 0x413c70 (in the 32-bit version). The vulnerability is triggered when the user opens a malicious TIFF image.
- CVE-2020-23546High
IrfanView 4.54 contains a vulnerability that allows an attacker to cause a denial of service or possibly other unspecified impacts via a crafted XBM file. The issue is related to data from a faulting address being used as arguments in a function call in FORMATS!ReadMosaic.
Original NVD description (English source)
A vulnerability was detected in IrfanView 4.76.0.0 on Win64. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component TIFF Wang Annotation Handler. Performing a manipulation results in heap-based buffer overflow. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. The complexity of an attack is rather high. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The exploit is now public and may be used. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue. The vendor confirms: "[T]he TIF-Annotations option is OFF by default. Means, normal users are not affected ... the danger level for this is low".
