8th percentile - higher than 8% of all known CVEs

Summary

phpMyAdmin through 5.2.3 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability in CustomServer::parseAndValidateAssertionResponse() that never verifies WebAuthn assertion signatures against stored public keys. Attackers holding a victim's MySQL credentials can POST a crafted webauthn_request_response with matching challenge, origin, and rpIdHash to bypass the second factor and gain database privileges.

Risk Assessment

An attacker with MySQL credentials can bypass WebAuthn two-factor authentication and gain database access. This undermines trust in the MFA mechanism and can lead to full database takeover.

Recommendation

Update phpMyAdmin to a version later than 5.2.3. Until patched, consider disabling WebAuthn as a second factor or strengthening access controls to phpMyAdmin.
