Summary

dnspython before 2.9.0 has a vulnerability where dns.name.from_wire_parser follows attacker-controlled DNS compression pointer chains without a hop limit. A malicious DNS wire-format message can force excessive pointer traversal during name decompression, causing high CPU use, application degradation, or denial of service in applications processing untrusted DNS messages. The issue is fixed in version 2.9.0.

Risk Assessment

Applications processing untrusted DNS responses can be overloaded or stalled by a malicious message. This can cause denial of service for services relying on name resolution.

Recommendation

Upgrade dnspython to version 2.9.0 or later. Until then, limit processing of untrusted DNS messages and consider timeouts and process isolation.
