Summary

In virtualenv versions 21.14.8 through 21.14.10, the app-data seeder can leave an environment linked to temporary package files that virtualenv deletes when creation finishes. Enabling symlink_app_data via environment variable or configuration file can trigger this state even though the command-line flag is disabled for temporary app-data. The resulting environment depends on a cache pathname its owner no longer controls. This is fixed in version 21.14.10.

Risk Assessment

The environment may reference deleted or uncontrolled temporary files, potentially causing failures or unwanted code injection during package installation. Risk mainly affects CI/CD pipelines and development environments using virtualenv.

Recommendation

Upgrade virtualenv to version 21.14.10 or later. Avoid enabling symlink_app_data via environment variables and configuration files in production and CI environments.

Original NVD description (English source)

virtualenv is a tool for creating isolated virtual python environments. From 21.14.8 until 21.14.10, the app-data seeder can leave an environment linked to temporary package files that virtualenv deletes when creation finishes. The environment-variable and configuration-file forms of symlink_app_data can enable this state even though the command-line flag is disabled for temporary app-data. The resulting environment depends on a cache pathname that its owner no longer controls. This issue is fixed in version 21.14.10.
