37th percentile - higher than 37% of all known CVEs

Summary

modern-tar 0.3.5 through 0.8.5 contains a memory exhaustion vulnerability that allows attackers to produce negative entry sizes via non-octal bytes parsed by readOctal(). Attackers can supply a crafted, optionally gzip-compressed, archive to unpackTar() that buffers chunks indefinitely, exhausting process memory and suppressing later entries.

Risk Assessment

The risk includes process memory exhaustion, potentially leading to denial of service and disruption of application functionality.

Recommendation

It is recommended to update to a version newer than 0.8.5 and implement size limits and validation of archive entries to prevent memory exhaustion.
