Summary

A flaw in the SMTP email configuration handling of the keycloak-services component. When STARTTLS is enabled, Keycloak fails to strictly enforce an encrypted connection, allowing fallback to unencrypted communication if the encryption request is tampered with. An attacker who can intercept network traffic could capture sensitive email credentials and message content in plain text.

Risk Assessment

Interception of SMTP credentials and email content could lead to leakage of authentication data and confidential correspondence. Exploitation requires the ability to intercept network traffic (e.g., a man-in-the-middle attack).

Recommendation

Update Keycloak to a version containing the fix that strictly enforces STARTTLS encryption. Until then, consider enforcing encryption at the network infrastructure level.
