Summary

A vulnerability was found in the Linux kernel's AMD PMU driver. A subtle race condition between NMI handling and throttle can cause cpuc->events[idx] to become NULL, leading to a NULL pointer dereference and general protection fault (GPF) in amd_pmu_enable_all(). This issue is AMD-specific.

Risk Assessment

An attacker could trigger a GPF, causing a kernel panic and denial of service (DoS). In extreme cases, it might allow privilege escalation or information disclosure.

Recommendation

Immediately update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix (commit adding NULL check before x86_pmu_enable_event in amd_pmu_enable_all). For production systems, apply the security patch from your distributor.

Original NVD description (English source)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: perf/x86/amd: Check event before enable to avoid GPF On AMD machines cpuc->events[idx] can become NULL in a subtle race condition with NMI->throttle->x86_pmu_stop(). Check event for NULL in amd_pmu_enable_all() before enable to avoid a GPF. This appears to be an AMD only issue. Syzkaller reported a GPF in amd_pmu_enable_all.
