Summary

Traefik versions 3.5.0 through 3.6.2 have inverted TLS verification logic in the nginx.ingress.kubernetes.io/proxy-ssl-verify annotation. Setting the annotation to "on" (intending to enable backend TLS certificate verification) actually disables verification. This allows man-in-the-middle attacks against HTTPS backends when operators believe they are protected. The issue is fixed in version 3.6.3.

Risk Assessment

Organizations using Traefik as a reverse proxy may be exposed to interception of traffic to HTTPS backends despite having TLS verification enabled. An attacker in a MITM position can impersonate the backend and capture data.

Recommendation

Upgrade Traefik to version 3.6.3 or later. Until then, verify whether the proxy-ssl-verify annotation is used in your configuration and consider additional network-level controls.
