Summary

In the Linux kernel, in the ice (Intel Ethernet) driver, ice_unplug_aux_dev() checks pf->cdev_info->adev for NULL, but pf->cdev_info can also be NULL, leading to a NULL pointer dereference during reset when the driver is loaded without RDMA support. The fix introduces a flag set when the auxbus device is successfully created to avoid multiple NULL checks.

Risk Assessment

This can cause a kernel crash during network interface reset on Intel ice cards without RDMA, leading to network unavailability. Exploitation requires local access to write to sysfs.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix. Avoid resetting ice interfaces without RDMA support until updated.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ice: fix NULL pointer dereference in ice_unplug_aux_dev() on reset Issuing a reset when the driver is loaded without RDMA support, will results in a crash as it attempts to remove RDMA's non-existent auxbus device: echo 1 > /sys/class/net/<if>/device/reset BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000008 ... Introduce a flag to be set when the creation of the auxbus device is successful, to avoid multiple NULL pointer checks in ice_unplug_aux_dev().
