Summary

The Popup Box WordPress plugin before version 5.5.0 does not properly validate nonces in the add_or_edit_popupbox() function before saving popup data, allowing unauthenticated attackers to perform CSRF attacks. When an authenticated admin visits a malicious page, the attacker can create or modify popups with arbitrary JavaScript that executes in the admin panel and frontend.

Risk Assessment

The risk is that an attacker can take control of popup content and execute malicious scripts in the admin context, potentially leading to data theft, session hijacking, or further attacks on users.

Recommendation

Immediately update the Popup Box plugin to version 5.5.0 or later. Also inform administrators about the risk of clicking suspicious links and implement additional CSRF protections.
