27th percentile - higher than 27% of all known CVEs

Summary

Mattermost versions 11.0.x <= 11.0.2, 10.12.x <= 10.12.1, 10.11.x <= 10.11.4, and 10.5.x <= 10.5.12 fail to verify that the token used during code exchange originates from the same authentication flow. This allows an authenticated user to perform account takeover via a crafted email address when switching authentication methods and sending a request to /users/login/sso/code-exchange. It requires ExperimentalEnableAuthenticationTransfer enabled (default) and RequireEmailVerification disabled (default).

Risk Assessment

An authenticated attacker can take over another user's account, gaining access to their data and privileges. This may lead to privilege escalation and compromise of communications.

Recommendation

Upgrade Mattermost to a patched version. Consider disabling ExperimentalEnableAuthenticationTransfer and enabling RequireEmailVerification if not required.
