Summary

The Banhammer plugin for WordPress (up to version 3.4.8) has a blocking bypass vulnerability. A site-wide secret key is deterministically generated from a constant character set using md5() and base64_encode() and stored in the banhammer_secret_key option. This allows unauthenticated attackers to bypass logging and blocking by appending a GET parameter named banhammer-process_{SECRET} with a predictable value, causing Banhammer to abort protections for that request.

Risk Assessment

Risk of bypassing security controls, allowing attackers to send malicious traffic without being logged or blocked. This could lead to attacks such as spam or DDoS.

Recommendation

Update the Banhammer plugin to the latest version that fixes this vulnerability. If not available, consider changing the key generation mechanism or adding additional protections.

Original NVD description (English source)

The Banhammer – Monitor Site Traffic, Block Bad Users and Bots plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Blocking Bypass in all versions up to, and including, 3.4.8. This is due to a site-wide “secret key” being deterministically generated from a constant character set using md5() and base64_encode() and then stored in the `banhammer_secret_key` option. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to bypass the plugin’s logging and blocking by appending a GET parameter named `banhammer-process_{SECRET}` where `{SECRET}` is the predictable value, thereby causing Banhammer to abort its protections for that request.
