Summary

In the Linux kernel, in the DRM driver for MediaTek, a potential NULL pointer dereference in mtk_crtc_destroy() was fixed. If mbox_request_channel() fails, the cmdq_client.chan pointer is set to NULL, and cmdq_pkt_create() is not called. During cleanup, the pointer must be checked for NULL before calling cmdq_pkt_destroy() to avoid a NULL pointer dereference.

Risk Assessment

Potential system crashes or hangs due to NULL pointer dereference in the MediaTek graphics driver, leading to system instability.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing this fix to avoid potential crashes related to null pointers.

Original NVD description (English source)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/mediatek: Fix potential NULL dereference in mtk_crtc_destroy() In mtk_crtc_create(), if the call to mbox_request_channel() fails then we set the "mtk_crtc->cmdq_client.chan" pointer to NULL. In that situation, we do not call cmdq_pkt_create(). During the cleanup, we need to check if the "mtk_crtc->cmdq_client.chan" is NULL first before calling cmdq_pkt_destroy(). Calling cmdq_pkt_destroy() is unnecessary if we didn't call cmdq_pkt_create() and it will result in a NULL pointer dereference.
