Summary

In the Linux kernel, a bug exists in ACPI battery hook handling. When a battery hook returns an error while adding a new battery, it is automatically unregistered, but the hook provider is unaware and later calls battery_hook_unregister() on the already unregistered hook, causing a crash.

Risk Assessment

Can lead to a kernel panic and system unavailability, especially on devices with ACPI battery support. In production environments this means potential downtime and loss of service continuity.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix (commit using the list head to mark already unregistered battery hooks). Verify the kernel version on systems with ACPI battery support.

Original NVD description (English source)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ACPI: battery: Fix possible crash when unregistering a battery hook When a battery hook returns an error when adding a new battery, then the battery hook is automatically unregistered. However the battery hook provider cannot know that, so it will later call battery_hook_unregister() on the already unregistered battery hook, resulting in a crash. Fix this by using the list head to mark already unregistered battery hooks as already being unregistered so that they can be ignored by battery_hook_unregister().
