Summary

KEPServerEX versions 6.0 to 6.14.263 are vulnerable to an attack that can lead to uncontrolled resource consumption by reading a recursively defined object. The OPC UA protocol used by KEPServerEX does not check if an object is recursively defined, which can lead to stack overflow and device crash.

Risk Assessment

An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to remotely trigger a device crash, potentially causing downtime and financial losses for the organization.

Recommendation

It is recommended to update KEPServerEX to the latest version that includes security patches and to implement network traffic monitoring to detect potential attacks.

Original NVD description (English source)

PTC’s KEPServerEX Versions 6.0 to 6.14.263 are vulnerable to being made to read a recursively defined object that leads to uncontrolled resource consumption. KEPServerEX uses OPC UA, a protocol which defines various object types that can be nested to create complex arrays. It does not implement a check to see if such an object is recursively defined, so an attack could send a maliciously created message that the decoder would try to decode until the stack overflowed and the device crashed.
