Summary

A NULL pointer dereference vulnerability exists in the vmwgfx driver in drivers/gpu/vmxgfx/vmxgfx_execbuf.c in the GPU component of the Linux kernel, reachable via the device file '/dev/dri/renderD128 (or Dxxx)'. It allows a local attacker with a user account on the system to gain privilege and cause a denial of service (DoS).

Risk Assessment

A local user can trigger a kernel crash and denial of service, and potentially escalate privileges. This affects availability and security of systems where GPU render devices are accessible to unprivileged users.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the vmwgfx driver fix. Restrict access to /dev/dri/renderD* devices to trusted users only.
