CVE-2022-29824

MediumCVSS 6.5
Published: Updated: Translated: NVD NIST

Exploitation Probability (EPSS)

High risk
3.75%

90th percentile - higher than 90% of all known CVEs

Summary

In libxml2 before 2.9.14, buffer handling functions in buf.c (xmlBuf*) and tree.c (xmlBuffer*) do not check for integer overflows, which can result in out-of-bounds memory writes. Exploitation requires a victim to open a crafted, multi-gigabyte XML file. Other software using libxml2's buffer functions, such as libxslt through 1.1.35, is also affected.

Risk Assessment

An attacker could cause process crashes or potential arbitrary code execution in applications processing XML data, posing significant risks to integrity and availability.

Recommendation

Update libxml2 to version 2.9.14 or later and update dependent software such as libxslt.
