Summary

WinSCP before 5.17.10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary programs when the URL handler encounters a crafted URL that loads session settings. This is exploitable, for example, in a default installation in which WinSCP is the handler for sftp:// URLs.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can trick a user into clicking a crafted sftp:// link, leading to execution of an arbitrary program on their workstation and potential system compromise.

Recommendation

Upgrade WinSCP to version 5.17.10 or later. Consider disabling WinSCP as the default handler for sftp:// URLs on the system.
