Summary

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel before 5.7.3 in the get_user_pages implementation (mm/gup.c, mm/huge_memory.c). For copy-on-write pages it does not properly consider read operation semantics, which can grant unintended write access.

Risk Assessment

A local attacker may gain unintended write access to memory, potentially leading to data corruption or privilege escalation. In multi-tenant environments this increases the risk of breaking process isolation.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to version 5.7.3 or later. If updating is not possible, restrict local access for untrusted users and monitor for unusual memory operations.

Original NVD description (English source)

An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel before 5.7.3, related to mm/gup.c and mm/huge_memory.c. The get_user_pages (aka gup) implementation, when used for a copy-on-write page, does not properly consider the semantics of read operations and therefore can grant unintended write access, aka CID-17839856fd58.
